Welcome to Discovery Education's comprehensive guide for setting up your new or replacement MacBook. This article provides step-by-step instructions to ensure a smooth sign-in and setup process. If you encounter any questions or issues during this process, please submit a ticket, or call our helpdesk number at (704) 457-0082.
Important: MacBooks are required to have an internet connection to sign in with Microsoft SSO when fully rebooted. To bypass SSO in a situation where you do not have an internet connection, please read this article.
Step 1: Unboxing and Hardware Setup
- Carefully unbox your new laptop and ensure that it is not damaged and that all the included accessories are present.
- MacBook Laptop
- Charger
- USB-C Adapter
- Plug the laptop into a power source using the provided charger and turn it on by pressing the power button.
Step 2: Initial Setup
- The laptop will boot up and guide you through the initial setup process.
- Choose your region and accessibility preferences.
Step 3: Connect to Wi-Fi
- Select your Wi-Fi network from the available options.
- In DE Offices: Connect to DE-Internal using your SSO email and password. More information can be found here.
- You will be greeted with a Discovery Education Remote Management screen. Select Continue, and your device will begin downloading our profiles and policies. This step can take several minutes.
- Important: If you do not see the Remote Management screen, please immediately call our helpdesk number at (704) 457-0082.
Step 4: Microsoft Account
- Sign in with your Discovery Education Microsoft account.
- New Users: Your Microsoft account email and temporary password should have been sent to your personal email before your first day. If you have not changed your temporary password or set up Microsoft Authenticator, you will be prompted to do so.
- Note: With macOS SSO login, you will always need to use 2FA when the machine is rebooted, and the Stay signed in option does not work.
Step 5: Configuration
- Click the checkbox to Enable Location Services.
- Setup Touch ID if you wish to use it to unlock your MacBook.
- Choose Your Look with a Light or Dark Theme.
- Your laptop will next open to the desktop screen and start downloading applications in the background. You can continue using the laptop, but it will take ten to twenty minutes to install all of our core applications.
- To check the progress of application installs, open Launchpad or Spotlight and search for the Self-Service app. You will be asked to Allow the app to use Bluetooth, choose OK. Click on Your Apps, and you will see Installing... prompts.
- You will see many notifications during the installation process. These can be dismissed.
Step 6: macOS Updates
- Your laptop will need to download the latest macOS and native application updates for your device. Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner > System Settings > General and choose Software Update.
- MacOS will automatically start checking for updates. If any are available, choose Update Now. You will most likely need to reboot the device once it finishes.
Step 7: Install Additional Apps
- Essential apps are installed automatically, for example, Zoom, Slack, and Microsoft Office. If you wish to install more applications, open the Self-Service app on your laptop to see what is available or visit our approved apps page on OneDE. Please only install needed applications to avoid space over use.
Step 8: Data Transfer (If Applicable)
- If you're migrating from an older laptop, please back up all your data into OneDrive so it is available on your new laptop. For your browser data, please also ensure you are signed in and syncing to your Discovery Education account in Microsoft Edge.
All policies and procedures can be found on our IT page on OneDE. If you have any questions or encounter any issues during the setup process, please submit a ticket, or call our helpdesk number at (704) 457-0082.
